A Letter to the Minister of Education from a High School Student

The following is a letter to the Minister of Education written by a student in Class 309. She was assigned to write on this topic last Thursday and did a very good job. Really loving some points she mentioned, I encouraged her to send it to our Minister of Education.

A Letter to the Minister of Education

 Dear Sir,

Thank you for taking time to read my letter. Recently, I’ve noticed that you’ve made some changes in our education system. As a high school student, I appreciate your effort in trying to improve the whole system so that we might be able to learn more, and learn happily, but I feel that your effort has been in vain.

The improvement that needs to be made is not in our textbooks or the way our teachers teach us, but in ourselves, the students. I think that the Ministry of Education should arrange more courses that involve leadership, research, and self-expression. Students shouldn’t be told what to do all the time, but instead, be independent, creative, and able to show our own talents and abilities. If we have been taught to only care about our test scores, they will be the only thing we value, and therefore we will disregard any other abilities we might have been endowed with. This could lead to selfishness, in the pursuit of a better grade. Students should not be valued by the GPA they hold, but by who they are as a person, and the passion they hold for learning. Therefore, I propose that the government emphasize activities like debates, sports competitions, science projects, etc, so that students will be more open-minded and learn to work together, respect each other, and learn to think about others; hence, selfishness would not be a characteristic that the government is guilty of planting in them.

Thank you again for taking the time to read this. Your efforts to help students of Taiwan grow mentally and intellectually is highly appreciated.

Sincerely yours,

Amy
