Be it home or school education, the most important thing to teach kids is empathy. When one can stand in someone else's shoes, they won't hurt others because they know how painful it is. When one is empathetic, they are willing to help because they understand what a difference their assistance could make. If someone in the army during the mistreatment of Hung Chung-chiu (洪仲丘) had ever felt empathy for him, he would have returned happily to his loving family, alive.
All my thoughts go to the Hung family. Yesterday a female student from Brazil said in Chinese something poignant when interviewed: "Why did Mr. Hung's own country treat him this way? It's not right!" At that, my heart ached. If only empathy had come into play!
