用英文思考 翻轉英文寫作困境

「學英文就是『背多分』，管他什麼道理，背下來就對了。」台灣學生拚命背單字、死記文法，一旦畢業不考試，英文也全還給老師。聯經出版社繼兩年前出版交通大學外文系教授劉美君撰寫的「英文文法有道理！重新認識英文文法觀念」後，近日再推出她的「英文寫作有訣竅！三句話翻轉英文寫作困境」一書（見圖，聯經提供）。她說，學好英文要習慣用英文邏輯思考，寫好英文文章則要了解「G—S—G三進式原則」。

My comments: English writing tends to go from general to specific.

劉美君表示，一直思考國人英語學不好的原因。她後來發現，人有「個性」，而英文也有所謂的「語性」，例如中文可以說「因為…所以…」，不過英文「Because、So」卻不能同時出現在一個句子裡。Because和So都是連接詞，一個句子只要一個連接詞就可以，所以兩個字不會同時出現在一個句子中。

劉美君說，英文寫作要寫得好，關鍵在於建立用英文邏輯來思考的習慣。她指出，英文表達有「主從分明」的語性，也就是一篇文章中要有G—S—G三進式原則：General（交代重點）、Specific（列舉事實）、General（概括總結）。且要用「最重要的話」說明重點，「最具說服力的話」舉證事實，以及「最令人感動的話」下結論。

My comments: Agreed. The topic sentence is the most important sentence in a paragraph, which is what the writer wants the reader to agree with. The body is written to support the topic sentence, so it has to be persuasive. The conclusion is intended to reinforce the topic sentence and at the same time strike a chord in the reader's heart. Most students neglect the power of the concluding sentence. Sometimes their conclusion even goes off the topic. When teaching writing, I put a lot of emphasis on how students wrapped up their essay.
