〔編譯張沛元／綜合報導〕英國每日電訊報6日報導，根據一份最新研究，separate是最常被拼錯的英文字，原因出在該字第4個字母A，經常被誤拼為E。

My comments: I often remind my students the word "separate" contains two E's and two A's, mirroring each other; that is, e-a-a-e, if we divide the word into half.

市場研究顧問公司www.OnePoll.com日前針對3500名英國人進行最常被拼錯字的調查，並整理出一份前20個最常被拼錯的英文字名單，高居榜首的是separate（分割，分離，個別），definitely（明確地，肯定地）屈居第二，拼錯處在於第二個I被拼成A，或是漏掉最後一個E。

My comments: Many students in Taiwan do make the mistakes as mentioned.

第三名的manoeuvre（調動，英式拼法）害人拼錯的關鍵，在於罕見的OE與U相連；第四名的embarrass（尷尬，困窘）則常被少拼了一個R或S。名列第五的occurrence（事件，發生）的拼錯處，則是搞不清楚該字有連續兩個C與連續兩個R。

My comments: When it comes to the word "occurrence," since students have no problem with "occur," they don't often miss a C. As for -rr-, they will remember two R's if they know the following spelling rule:

CVC + ed/ing/V-- --> CVCCed/ing/V-- *(CVC must be a stressed syllable)

www.OnePoll.com一名發言人指出，有些字總讓人下筆時掙扎再三，包括令人頭大的separate；常見的拼字錯誤就是根據發音來拼寫，以致把某些字母搞錯而拼錯字；所幸電腦的拼字檢查可以矯正拼字錯誤，但這也同時意味人變得愈來愈懶，以及不想學會正確拼法。

第13名的questionnaire（問卷）的兩個N常令人困惑，第16名的entrepreneur（企業家）與第20名的parallel（平行）也常被拼錯。沒有擠進前20名的常拼錯字，包括calendar（日曆）、pigeon（鴿子）與changeable（可改變的）。

該研究還發現，6分之1英國人拼字錯得離譜，以致電腦的拼字檢查甚至不知道此人原本想拼的是哪個字；3分之2的人坦承使用電腦的拼字檢查讓他們手寫懶得檢查，5分之1的人怪罪手機智慧型輸入法降低拼字能力。
