Last Thursday Hsuan-an (賴旋安), a former 303 student who graduated from college this year and is going to the army next Monday, came and talked to my class.

Hsuan-an talked about how four years ago he became a "dark horse" and went to his dream university NTU, majoring in Accounting. With a mediocre academic performance in his 2nd year, he started to work very hard during the summer before he turned a senior and passed the UEE with flying colors.

The following is my notes of his speech.

1. Set your goal and always keep the goal in your mind. First, set a more attainable goal. With hard work, you will make progress, and thus, adjust your goal higher.

2. Time is limited, so don't spend much time playing. You have a lot of time to play and have fun after the UEE.

3. Study very hard. Through repetition, you will remember. In the 3rd-year, while others were chatting outside the classroom during the break, he did math or memorize English vocabulalry words in the classroom.

4. Spend more time on English and math.

5. Do extensive reading for English. He subscribed to Reader's Digest in the 3rd year. I remember one day after class, he told me he was very happy because the day before he read RD and learned a lot of good English expressions.

6. Your hard work will pay off. Going to a good university is important.

7. Follow the teachers in school. Husan-an didn't buy any extra UEE preparatio materials.

After class, Husan-an's friends told me he got a 101 TOEFL score (full score: 120) amd a 740 GMAT score (full score: 800).  Well done!   Then he showed me the only thing in his bag--an English novel Thanks for the Memories. He practices what he preaches--reading extensively, and that's why he can have such a good command of English.
