On Studying--Advice from Tzu-jung

Last Friday, in the class meeting period, I invited Tzu-jung (劉子榕) to talk to my class for 30 minutes. Tzu-jung is now a senior at our school. He got a 71 ranking score on the SAT and has been admitted to School of Pharmacy at NTU and Department of Photonics at National Chiao Tung University.

Let's Sing Together on May 5 the Song "You Raise Me Up"

For the recitation in the morning assembly on May 5, the juniors have to familiarize themselves with the song "You Raise Me Up" and be able to sing the first half of it from memory. Here are the lyrics of the first half, followed by three videos of this song from YouTube, one featuring Josh Groban, another Westlife with lyrics, and the other Celtic Woman :

You Are Tougher

Today a student came to have a chat with me. She said recently she posted on Facebook about her low mood. Among the responses she got, the most impressive one is from a Russian lady: "Life is tough, but you are tougher."

Today the 2nd-year students of our school had their target practice in Keelung. My class went for the practice in the morning. The students were excited, some nervous when hearing the deafening gun sounds.

The Duality of Life

In Unit 5 "True Nobility," following the famous article is an interpretation made by Jules Crowell, in two paragraphs. The first paragraph is about the duality of life, which Crowell mentioned "makes for the beauty of our existence and the world." He further explained that as the darkness of the night makes it possible to see the brightness of the stars in the sky, so the bitterness of sorrow makes it easier for us to appreciate the sweetness of joy.

Yesterday afternoon, in the hallway I came across Richard, an exchange student from Germany who is studying in Class 220. Although he is not a student in my class, we know each other due to a small talk we had last semester. Caring about how he had been doing, I stopped him and struck up a conversation.

The Risk of Using Only English-Chinese Dictionaries

This afternoon, as a warm-up activity for Unit 5 "True Nobility," I asked my special-class student how he would define the word "nobility." Of course, I gave him its common Chinese translation "高貴." He told me he would think a person noble if he/she dresses differently, walks differently, or talks slowly. I laughed and told him what he thought of as noble, in fact, should be described as "elegant" in English. Then I read to him the definition given in the textbook: nobility: the state of being honest, brave, and unselfish in one's personal character. After that, we discussed the warm-up question in the textbook, in which he was asked to decide which two acts were nobler than the other two and why. Understanding the meaning of the English word "noble," he then gave me very good reasons for his decision.
