Interview with Ya-han Tzeng about how to prepare for the UEE

On the night before the school starts, I decided to interview my former student Ya-han Tzeng (曾雅韓), who scored highest among the NHSH students on the 2008 UEE.  The following are her suggestions on how to prepare for the UEE:

1. Follow the teachers' schedules.

2. Never put off what you should study today until tomorrow.

3. Stay at school after school to study.

4. Chinese:

   1) Ask the teacher until you understand everything.

   2) Study the handouts the teacher gives.

5. English:

   1) Study English happily.

   2) Review the textbooks thoroughly.  Understand every sentence in them.

   3) Far-East Vocabulary Levels 5 and 6 are very useful.  If you can get familiar with every word in the two books, you'll know every word on the UEE.

   4) Meow-meow Tests help a lot, too.

   5) Review the translation book and the grammar book before the UEE.

   6) Reading 7000 (Classroom) is a very good book.

   7) What's the most important is to read a lot.  Ya-han read some novels in the third year, such as Who Moved My Cheese?, The Five People You Meet in Heaven, etc.  She borrowed novels to read either from me or her classmate Ben.  Ya-han kept emphasizing this point.

6~8 are for students who major in the humanities and social science:

6. Math

   1) Concentrate so that you can understand the important concepts in class.

   2) If you don't understand some concepts, ask the teacher.

   3) Talk to the math teacher often, and you may find easier ways to solve a math problem.

7. History

   1) Study the "small green book," especially for Chinese and Taiwanese history.

   2) As for world history, study the textbook.

   3) Handouts help.

8. Geography

   1) Ask the teacher questions.

   2) Do a lot of exercises.

   3) Do not spend too much time on geography because not many departments take it as an admission requirement.

Finally, Ya-han said it is very important to stay happy every day because you would feel very bored if you are not happy.  She preferred to study with friends.   Friends are a source of happiness.
