台灣英語教育怎麼了？小時頂呱呱 高中差

 多益測驗及劍橋大學ESOL考試院今天分別公布台灣學生英語能力報告，顯示台灣7至12歲學生的英語能力，在亞洲英語非官方語言國家中名列第二，僅次於印尼；但比較高中以上學生的多益成績，台灣高中生平均524分，比韓國高中生平均675分，大幅落後151分，對國內英語教育是一個警訊。

Comments: Before making the conclusion, we must first take a look at what is tested on the TOEIC and who the examinees were. TOEIC is definitely a proficiency test, but does it test students' general English ability or specific ability? I'd like to do an experiment with my students, but first I have to find a past TOEIC.

兩大英語測驗及認證機構的報告也同時指出，台灣學生的英語聽說能力，優於讀寫能力。劍橋大學ESOL在台辦事處經理王舒葳分析，台灣國、高中的英語教學模式偏重單字背誦及文法規則記憶，然而機械式的知識記憶，容易讓學生失去興趣，無法持續學習。這也是為什麼現階段大學生英語表現不如預期的主因。

My comments: For our students to improve their reading and writing ability, they need to read more. My 214 and 209 students have borrowed some English novels from me: The Five People You Meet in Heaven, The Reader, The Alchemist, Charoltte's Web, Dead Poets Society, and an Agatha Christie's novel. Some borrowed Reader's Digest. I feel ecstatic when students come to borrow English books to read.  Seeing them absorbed in the novels in a period of  Reading and Writing Class is one of the most wonderful things happening to me.

As stated in the book Peaks and Valleys, "To stay on the peak longer, do more of what got us there." Only if students can keep in contact with English, such as listening to English program, or reading English novels, newspapers, or magazines, will they stay on the peak. How to maintain interest is important.

ETS多益台灣區代表執行副總甯耀南則認為，升學考試、手機、電腦普及帶動圖像式閱讀，妨礙了學生深度閱讀能力，但閱讀能力下降，是全球普遍的問題。

My comments: According to my experience, those who read a lot in English are those who have a good command of the language.

劍橋大學ESOL考試院今天發表「台灣學童英語表現趨勢報告」指出，台灣7至12歲學童的英語表現，整體而言在世界水準之上。在亞洲地區的表現，台灣學童平均位居第五，次於馬來西亞、印度、印尼、香港；但在英語非官方語文國家，台灣學童的表現排名亞洲第二，僅次於印尼，超越大陸及南韓等重要競爭對手。但調查也發現台灣學生隨著年齡增長，讀寫能力反而原地踏步、甚至退步。

ETS則比較2008年台、日、韓三國的高中生、技職生、一般大學生及研究生的多益成績。結果顯示，韓國高中生的表現最優，甚至比韓國研究生的成績還高。甯耀南表示，這是韓國總統李明博在擔任漢城市長任內，傾全城之力提升高中生英語能力的成果。

My comments: How did they make it?

台灣一般大學生多益平均是577分，雖較日本高24分，卻落後韓國44分。在技職院校部分，台灣是408分，也比韓國技職生落後52分，甚至較日本二年制短期大學落後76分。

在高中的部分，台灣平均524分，與日本的522分不相上下，但卻遠低於韓國的675分，可說是落後一大截。而在研究所方面，台灣平均成績585分，與日本的583分接近，但落後韓國的663分將近80分，明顯處於落後的態勢，值得警惕。
