Ken's Visit to Class 214

This morning, Ken (王慶剛), a former student who is studying at Chengchi University majoring in Journalism and English, visited my Class 214. He talked to them in English for three quarters of the time. And the students paid their undivided attention. The following are some key points he mentioned:

1. Set the goal. With a definite goal, one can start to get prepared earlier. Ken took himself as an example. He set the goal to get into journalism in his 2nd year of high school. Therefore, he took the broadcasting club seriously, and even became the president of the club.

2. Study hard. Studying should be every student's top priority. Students at NHSH are as competent as their counterparts at Jianguo or TFG High School, They are just not so diligent or not so good at time management.

3. Work more on their Chinese and English. Study Chinese and English not just for the test. These two languages are useful even after they finally leave school. They are the tools for communication. When Ken was in high school, he read a lot, such as English articles, newspaper, and magazines. Reading extensively is also the best way to improve one's Chinese. By this, he meant reading classics. Students at some top high school are assigned to read a lot during winter and summer vacations.

4. Do your best to get into a good university. Your effort will pay off because you can enjoy more resources in a good school.

5. Cherish your high school life. College life is not as carefree as thought. Unlike high school, where every student has the same goal--to go to college, and thus it's easy to form a sense of unity, your classmates in college have different goals, especially in the senior year.

6. If you have already set a definite goal; that is, if you know what you really love, then don't be swayed by others, even your parents. It's your life.

After the talk, there was a Q & A session. The whole activity didn't end until the bell of the next class rang. Here I'd like to thank Ken, who is always ready to help, to offer advice. And I'd like to thank Class 214 too, for being such wonderful audience, showing much respect for the speaker.
