Poor English, Good English, Why?

台灣學生們 為何菜英文?

學非所用!大學教授點出國內學生「菜英文」的主因。強調英語教育過度考試取向,導致學生只會寫選擇題,基本的閱讀、作文能力卻很低落。今年學測2萬多人英文作文「抱鴨蛋」,是國內英語教育的警訊。

世新大學英語系客座教授李振清表示,今年學測英文作文考看圖作文,難度約是國三到高一的程度考生只要掌握「地震」、「傷心」等基本字彙,運用簡單複合句就能寫出不錯的文章。沒想到卻考倒一票高三考生,2萬多人零分。前年大學指考,英文考20分以下的考生就占全體考生的20%,顯示台灣的英語教育出了問題。

「教育實用脫節了」

「學非所用」,李振清點出,學校英語教學和實用脫節,是台灣英語教育最主要問題。不少都會區的孩子,在雙語幼稚園上英文課,輕鬆活潑的氣氛,孩子都能說上幾句簡單的英文,順利應付國小英文課。但一上了國中,課業壓力開始扭曲英語學習;高中階段更是國內英語教育主要問題所在。

「一切都是為了學測和指考」,李振清指出,國內多數高中,英語教學只是訓練學生「反射式」地回答考題,死背文法。甚至有明星高中,二年級下學期就上完三年的英文課程,整個高三都在考試。這種教學方式,學生或許能應付參考書考題,遇到學測、指考靈活題型就沒輒;基本的英語閱讀、寫作能力更是付之闕如,遑論聽、講英文的能力。若缺少閱讀興趣,英文能力很難進步。

度過了高中沈悶、無聊,甚至痛苦的英語課,李振清發現,不少大學生開始「英文休眠」,一休就是幾年,英語能力直直落。等到要準備研究所考試或步入職場,才發現英文能力不足,重回英語補習班。一來一往間,英文能力就遠遠落後香港、韓國等亞洲國家。

要如何改善英語教學困境?李振清說:「加強師資培育」。他指出,80年代國、高中英文老師需在職進修英語教學調整教學方式。政府應重拾類似作法,從師資著手,全面改進英語教育。

In fact, there are still many students in Taiwan who have a good command of English.   We don't need to feel despair.  My former students who were really good in English had something in common: 

1. They were highly motivated.

2. They enjoyed speaking English.  Some even made it a rule to speak to themselves in English.  Cloe (戴文琪), a former student in Advanced English Class, is a good example.  She often talked to herself in English when she was waiting for the bus, describing what she saw around.  She also translated into English what she overheard on the bus.  Diego (邱元亨) and Ken (王慶剛), also former students in Advanced English Class, came to speak English with me very often when they were studying at NHSH. 

3. They read a lot.  They read English newspapers, magazines, and novels.  Spencer (陳昭龍), a former student and now an English major, read a lot of readers when he was in his first year of high school.  He read Harry Potter during the summer vacation prior to his third year.  Miranda (萬修安), also an English major now, read TIME Magazine in her third year. 

4. They use in their speaking and writing what they've learned in class or from books.
