This afternoon, an old colleague who is still teaching LINEd and asked me how to make vocabulary learning interesting. My answer then was what first flashed into my mind:
"Use the words to talk about students' or our own life." This is what I used to do. Relating what the students are learning to real life brings life to the words.
"Have students present a skit using three to four of the new words. For example, vocabulary words 1-4 for Group 1, 5-8 for Group 2...." When students have to put the words in context that makes sense, they remember the words.
Since I was hurrying out then, I only offered these two suggestions.
