Observation of Ting-tze's Teaching

This morning, I was invited to Class 110 to observe a student teacher Ting-tze's teaching. What she taught today was the last two paragraphs of "The Phantom of the Opera" in Book One.

When I entered the classroom, the class were silently reading the second last paragraph, which was about Christine's discovery of how the Phantom looked. Then the teacher asked them some reading comprehension questions, which was followed by vocabulary teaching. While teaching the vocabulary, the teacher gave a lot of concrete examples and even acted out the new words. After the presentation of the new words, part of the film "The Phantom of the Opera" was played. After that came a group discussion. The teacher divided the whole class into three groups: Christine, the Phantom, and Raoul, and then gave each a different question to discuss: "At this point, what would you do if you were Christine/the Phantom/Raoul?" After around two minutes' discussion, each group shared their answer. I love this activity.

The procedure for teaching the last paragraph was similar. During the last 10 minutes, the teacher presented the song "Think of me." Its lyrics were given with some words missing. The students had to fill in 8 blanks while listening. The students had difficulty with some words. Then the teacher played the song again; this time with "Chinese" subtitles, which helped the students to figure out the words they missed in the first listening.

Before dismissing the class, the teacher gave an interesting writing assignment. The students had two options. First, if they like the story, then write a summary of the story. Second, if they don't like the story, change the ending.

Bravo, Ting-tze! You did a good job.
