My ccomments: Some English teaching pedagogies are against translation for fear of the interference from the learners' first language. However, I find that under some circumstances first langauge enhances instead of hindering foreign language learning.
An NTNU professor once told me that it was not until she translated the English in her son's textbook into Chinese and recorded both the English and the Chinese versions into tapes for her 3rd-grade son to listen to that he started to make progress and take interest in English.
