Is That Heaven?

Today I went to George's college class reunion with him. An old classmate of his, who came back to Taiwan from the U.S. on business for six days, told me about his daughter's junior high school life in the USA.

He was very surprised when he saw herds of students coming out of several cram schools the other night in Taipei. Compared to these students, his daughter, who is a 7th grader, has a fun life in the USA.

In her daughter's school, class is over at 3pm. After she gets home, she play in the backyard and then does some swimming. In the evening, she goes out with her friends, playing sports or just hanging around. Usually, students don't have homework. And they never have homework for weekends. Every week, the school holds a party for the students. Students wear make-up at such a young age. According to him, schools in the USA focus more on students' social life than studies when they are in junior high school. Asked when students are supposed to study, he asnwered that when they are in high school.

BTW, his daughter's school is a public one.

Compared with junior high school students in Taiwan, those in the States do have much more free time to develop themselves, to pursue their hobbies. However, what if some of them just party around? Is that heaven?
