University Professor Teaching High School Students English

This morning, a piece of news story attracted my attention.  Its heading is "University Professor Teaches English at High School."   I've long been curious about how university professors or Studio Classroom teachers would teach high school students the textbook English.  Now, Prof. Chen (陳超明教授) is doing teaching demonstration at Jingmei High School.   He has planned to teach one freshman class one hour per day for a month.  I admire his experimental spirit and dedication to English education.

Mr. Chen pointed out that the best way to learn English is to use it.  I hold the same belief.  In his class, he asks questions.  That's the main part of my class.   He also has students record their reading aloud of vocabulary words and make sentences with the new words. 

Mr. Chen mentioned that his way of teaching won't ensure students' good grades on mid-terms because mid-terms usually test students on details; however, he belives that if he can teach the students for three years, they will perform well on the SAT.   As for this, I have a different opinion. It is true that in the beginning the students will likely not do well on mid-terms, but as their interest is aroused and proficiency is  built, they will do quite well also on mid-terms.

大學教授 高中教英文

高一英文三民版本第五課談特洛伊戰爭,政大英文系教授陳超明昨天在台北市景美女中一年智班上英文課時,問學生「Who was Helen?」並點名回答。

學生說: 「『He』 was the most beautiful woman in the world.」,但隨即將He更正為She,因為Helen是女生。

陳超明還兼任政大公企中心主任,他認為,使用才是學習語言最好方式,本月起到景美女中教高一英文,每天1小時,為期1個月,「挑戰現有體制」,進行教學實驗,景美開放觀摩,每天都有校內外英語老師看大學教授如何教學。

陳超明說,學生英文學不好,被怪罪是國高中教法有問題,考試為主,學太多文法,卻不能活用,他想測試自己的理念可否用在高中教學現場。

陳超明用英文上課,中文為輔,他喜歡問學生問題,希望學生思考,且能主動學習,昨天復習第5課,他問了與特洛伊戰爭相關的人物、事件等共10多個問題,要學生以英文回答。

不同於老師天天考試,考英文單字拼法,陳超明上了5天課只考過一次,讓學生聽寫後拼單字,且要造句。

陳超明的功課也不太一樣,學生需將課本23個單字一字念5次,並且要錄下來,且每個單字都要造句,要學生了解單字使用方法。

陳超明不特別著重文法,在課堂上講解兩個句型,包括造句的重點要有主詞和動詞,可加入片語或修飾語來延伸內涵;另外,他還請學生上台寫句子,還打算讓學生分組上台講故事,練習寫作。

陳超明發現高中老師確實有不少難處,包括上課人數太多,一班40人,很難練習語文;其他包括測驗卷太多、課綱太過理想化,老師還要趕進度,確實不太容易。

陳超明說,段考考得太細,他這種教法,段考成績不會太好,但有把握教三年後,學生英文學測成績沒有問題;他認為能力分班有必要,且一班最好只有15到20人,現在流浪教師不少,教育部應訓練他們,投入英文教學。
