A Very Important Skill To Learn To Be Successful in the World Today_2005 NHSH English Writing Contest_First Prize

The following is the first-prize essay in 2005 NHSH Writing Contest. The winner Chi-ya Lin later represented the school to enter the citywide English writing contest and came in the 3rd place. Here I presented the essay as it was written without correction/revision. Although quite a few mistakes can be found in this essay, for students who just started to have writing class two months before the contest, this is good enough.

What is a very important skill a person should learn in order to be successful in the world today? Choose one skill and use specific reasons and examples to support your choice.

We are now living in a highly competitive society. To be outstanding, people might ask, “What is the skill that we have to be equipped with in order to demonstrate our competence?” Instead of using the computer system well or excel at English, I would say that it is much more important to learn to stand up from where you fell down. The reasons are obvious.

First, “Emotion is the most serious killer.” goes the old saying. Being a business person, we might often face the economic depression. But if we choose to give up rather than keep going, never again will the company thrive. As for students, especially students in Taiwan, we all face a bunch of pressure every day. The time is hard and we would definitely encounter some failures on our academic courses. If we have the skill of standing up again, it’s likely that we will lead to a successful life.

Second, there are enemies all way long, and you never know where the explosion will be. Once we learn the skill, our success can depend on we ourselves instead of others. I once read a story, the author was betrayed by one of his best friends. At first he kept complaining why would this kind of things happen to him. And he started to drink, and started to live a miserable life. But after he met someone who told him that the lost of his best friends should make him stronger, he changer. He realized that one’s success should be control by one self instead of those who want to look him down intentionally.

Last, it is the attitude that makes a man well. With the changing of jobs, bosses might need different people of different skills. Therefore, the attitude of not being afraid of facing defeats is which all companies needs, without exceptions.

I was once hurt in a relationship. The hurt made me lost my way of keep going. I often told myself that time heals everything, but it seemed no use at all. I lost my smile and I failed on my grades. But the matter is people don’t come back again as you tear. I am the one who can and is responsible for healing my own heart. The skill to stand up from where I fell down is the key to success without doubt.

To travel by the wind is easy. To be travel against the wind is certainly harder. To be competitive enough in today’s world, except for learning those outer abilities, we might want to cultivate our inner skills too.
