Welcome Party & Chien-yu's Presentation on Differentiated Instruction

This afternoon, I was invited to the NHSH welcome party held for the 5 new English teachers and 2 substitute teachers. Besides me, two other retired teachers, Yi-li and Da-chong, were also there. We had lunch together at TiMAMA Bakery & Cafe. After lunch, Chien-yu (葉倩羽老師) gave a presentation on "Differentiated Instruction from Reading to Writing."

I was really happy to see those old colleagues and meet new teachers. Old followed by new, it's a circle of life. Great that newcomers always join in while old members fade away.

Chien-yu presented how she and two other teachers, all of them now teaching in different schools, cooperated to put differentiated instruction into practice. The students were divided into three groups: low-achievers, intermediate-achievers, and high-achievers. Against the tradition, they named the low-achievers Group A, the intermediate-achievers Group B, and the high-achievers Group C. The students read the story "The View from the Window" at home, and worked as a group in class to complete different tasks. I found their approach to teaching this lesson was similar to the concept of flipped classroom, where students learn the content on their own at home with the help of teacher-made videos and do homework or have group discussion in class.

Listening to Chien-yu's description of how the class was conducted and reading the handouts, all of us agreed that for differentiated instruction to be possible, teamwork is a must.

Lunch first, plus a hearty chat
