上午八時的校園競爭力
清晨八點的大學校園，在對岸，是學生爭相進教室準備的奮發景象；在台灣，則是空蕩蕩的校園，許多學生懶得起床，學校則多把課排在九點以後。這是台大教授薛承泰觀察到的兩岸校園對比景象，他說，由此看兩岸校園競爭力的落差，驚悚程度猶甚於一千顆飛彈對準台灣。
對於這樣的差異，台灣社會的反應可想而知。有人說，台灣教育體制比較自由；有人說，大家志向不一樣；有人說，大學課程不吸引人，老師也該檢討。但除了這些堂皇的藉口，我們是不是該承認：台灣學生的奮發精神正在消退。再誠實一點說，那也預示台灣的未來國家競爭力正在削弱。
My comments: If students do think it important to go to class on time, be it because they respect the teacher or be it because they take punctuality as a virture, they will, however late they went to bed the previous night. When I was a student, I was never late for a class. Why? Because it was the right thing to do. Even in the winter when I studied in the States, I got up early enough for the 8 o'clock class, without an alarm clock.
當然，我們也不難舉出一些特殊的例子，說明有想法、有創意的台灣年輕人仍然不少；但整體而言，大學校園裡上課啃雞腿、睡大覺的散漫情景，已靡然成習。入學率百分之百的高等教育，對內而言，是浪費與失去了鑑別力；對外而言，則是失去品質，也失去國家競爭力。
My comments:If students have learned to respect whoever is teaching, they will sit straight, make eye contact, take notes, and give proper response. In every first class I taught, I would remind students of the importance of respect. I told them I also respected them.
學生晨起備課，絕非中國大陸的獨特景象，廿年前的台灣也是如此。這一代大學生的父母，應該都經歷過那樣自我鞭策與自我追求的年代，且樂在其中。曾幾何時，廿年的教改，在尋求教育體制的鬆綁之餘，卻把競爭打成惡魔，也鬆弛了學生的學習志趣與奮發精神。更可怕的是，大家對這些年台灣競爭力流逝的問題裝聾作啞，假裝問題都出在政治，與教育或學生的學習態度無關。
上午八時的校園，反映的一個世代的精神狀態，也是未來廿年國家競爭力指標。上午八時的比賽，台灣顯然落後了；這輸掉的部分，我們能否利用晚上八時以後追回來？
