The 2013 White Coat Ceremony at Chang Gung University

TIME: Saturday, April 20, 2013, 2pm

Place: Chang Gung University, International Conference Hall

This afternoon I attended a former student Tze-huang's white coat ceremony at Chang Gung University.  Tze-huang (謝志煌) didn't know I would be there until yesterday.  I was secretly invited by the freshmen of the medical school to give a 30-second talk to Tze-huang in a video to be played at the ceremony and write a letter to be handed to him today.  Though welcomed but not required to go to the ceremony in person, I'm still happy that I was there.

The following is the procedure.

The ceremomy started with the emcees' presenting a video clip showing the students' choice to study medicine.

The senior medical students were ushered in and introduced by pair, three, or four, with their childhood photo shown simultaneously.

The dean, the department chairman, a senior doctor, and the parent representative talked to the students.

A retrospective video was presented, in which the teachers gave their best wishes and there are students' familiar scenes on campus in the past four years.

The seniors, accompanied by the fifth-year students, went on stage ten by ten, received their white coat from a senior doctor, put on the white coat with the help of the upperclass fellow students, and had pictures taken.

After 20 students donned their white coat, a video was played, in which their family, former teacher, or good friend said something to them.

A video featuring love and help was watched.

After two seniors expressed gratitude on behalf of all the seniors, all the seniors turned and thanked their parents.

The seniors took the Hippocratic oath.  This is a solemn moment!

After each talked about their other dream(s), group pictures were taken.   There are 100 seniors this year.

After the ceremony, Tze-huang and I had our photos taken by his younger brother.

Some unsung heroes, today's heroes' underclass fellow students.  Without them, there would not have been the heartwarming ceremony.   All those who made the feat possible, thank you!

Yu-ren Lin (林俞任) and Zong-xuan Lin (林宗炫), the two Chang Gung students who came from Linkou to Neihu to video tape my talk on April 12.   They contributed tremendously.   I was very touched by their attitude.  During our interaction, their smile never faded.  They will be good doctors, I believe.
