Knowing What the Other Side Really Needs

Recently I've been reading How Will You Measure Your Life by Clayton M. Christensen, a professor at the Harvard Business School.   In the book, Christensen gives a remarkable and interesting insight into career, relationships, and character.  The following is the opening passage of Chapter Six "What Job Did You Hire That Milkshake For?"

"Many products fail because companies develop them from the wrong perspective.  Companies focus too much on what they want to sell their customers, rather than what those customers really need.  What's missing is empathy: a deep understanding of what problems customers are trying to solove.  The same is true in our relationships: we go into them thinking about what we want rather than what is important to the other person...." (p. 99)

In the chapter, the author also deals with a problem with education.  He points out that schools are hired for students to get two jobs done: to feel successful and to have friends and that if schools can fulfill their duty, students will surely be highly motivated to learn.
