On Max’s tenth birthday, his parents gave him the present he had been longing for since he was eight—a pet dog. He was ecstatic and decided to name it “Lucky.” The minute Lucky popped its head out of the present box, it began to wiggle excitedly. Max realized that this charming little present of his was really energetic, so he decided to buy a leash for it. Due to his limited amount of savings, he could only buy the cheapest one in the store, but because the shopkeeper had assured him of its quality, Max didn’t question its function.

Later, Max took Lucky on their very first journey to the park. To build a close relationship with Lucky, Max kept telling it how happy he was to have it. However, he had been so caught up in his feelings that he hadn’t noticed that Lucky had pulled away from the leash, until he looked down. In panic, Max looked in every nook and cranny of the park, but still couldn’t find energetic Lucky. He couldn’t help but shed a few tears of sorrow and drag his feet back home.

When he got home, he was surprised to hear Lucky barking at him with excitement. Instantly, Max felt as though a rock in his heart dropped, and all that was left was relief and joy. He also thought that it was perhaps because of his heart-to-heart talk with Lucky before his disappearance that brought Lucky back to him. This incident only made them cherish each other more.
