Using a Novel in Class

The other day, I found an article in a Longman ELT catalogue (1995-1996) entitled "WHAT EVERY TEACHER NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT GRADED READING." Besides explaining what graded readers are, it offers ways of using graded readers in class. The photos of the two-page article will come at the end of this entry.

This article reminded me of how I used E.B. White's novel The Trumpet of the Swan in an Advanced English class in 2003-2004. The class met only for two hours on Friday afternoon. I assigned the students to read two to three chapters with the help of a study guide before we met. On the handout were not only a few questions, most of which were based on the book, with a few asking students to reflect on what they read, but a vocabulary box for students to fill in new words they learned or liked. With the study guide, we always had a smooth discussion of the story in class.

After we finished the whole novel, I played the video of this novel for students to watch.
