同樣都翻成「修理」，repair跟fix有什麼差？

九合一選舉後，參選國民黨黨主席的新北市長朱立倫主張修憲公投、內閣制以及降低投票年齡，而且朱立倫提出「修憲這件事情是一定要做的」。
憲法的英文是constitution，那「修憲」的英文字彙應該是用repair還是fix？英文媒體報導這樣寫：Amendment of constitution is a must: Chu
標題是「朱立倫說：『修憲』是一件必須做的事」。雖然在英文裡，repair與fix都有「修」、「修理」的意思，但是「修憲」的修改憲法卻要用amend這個動詞，而其名詞為amendment。
amend：指正式的修改、修正、改正；常用於議案、提議等。

amend與其名詞amendment都是多益測驗的核心字彙，身處在國際職場的我們，要利用這次的「修憲」議題上，學會amend字彙家族裡的另一個字：mend（修理）。
mend：指修理、修補、改善。用法接近repair與fix，但多用來表示對打破、撕破、穿破的物品進行修理或修補，一般指較小之物；也可以表示治癒創傷、矯正錯誤或使破裂的感情重歸於好。

My comments: I recall the poem "Mending Wall" by Robert Frost.
mend在英語字源裡，有「錯誤、缺點」之意，因為有錯誤，所以要「修理、改善」。至於amend，字首a(b)-有away或off的離開之意，mend是錯誤缺點，把錯誤缺點拿走拿開，所以修憲一詞裡的amend是正式的修改、修正。
既然學了amend與mend，順便把前文提到，同為多益測驗核心字彙的repair與fix也學一下：
repair：指修理、修補；它的名詞與動詞同型。repair的對象範圍很廣，從房屋、道路、機器到日常生活必需品，是使受到一定損失或失靈的東西恢復其形狀或功能。不妨順便記一下repairman是「修理工人」。

fix：fix用於需要重新「調」物體的結構，把鬆散的部件固定結實，將分離的物體各部分裝配起來。 fix除了修理之外，常用的亦有「固定」的字義。

解析：
本題的正確答案是(B)。題意是「管線系統的翻新和維修需要技術熟練的工匠。」以答案(B)的skilled（有技能的）為最適合答案。答案(A)轉動的，答案(C)修改的，答案(D)本性的，皆不符句意。
空格前的highly是程度上「高度地」，亦即指「很、非常」。而題目中的repair與答案(C)的mended，就是前面文章中提到的「修理」。
英文裡有句諺語是：It is never too late to mend.字面上是永遠不會太晚而不能改正，mend是「改正」或指改過自新；與中文諺語的「亡羊補牢，未為晚也」很接近。把英文的正確用法學起來，是永遠不嫌晚的！
