There's a Difference

There IS a difference between these two sentences:

"You win some; you lose some."

"You lose some; you win some."

What we emphasize usually comes near the end of what we say.  And that's why, followed by the sentence "That is life," we would prefer to say "You win some; you lose some. That is life," since "That is life" sounds like one is resigned to life.

Take daily conversation for another example. I once heard that if we say something undesirable even after we do pay compliments to someone, they tend to think we are criticizing them and that the compliments are insincere, but that if we reverse the order, they would happily accept the comments, taking the compliments more seriously. Hmm, interesting!
