推薦英文書／好好K書 別只上臉書

高中職、國中小學寒假，從今天開始，雖然時間很短，但不妨利用時間好好讀書，不要只上臉書。實踐大學應外系講座教授陳超明分別從國中及高中程度，各推薦兩本英文書，建議學生閱讀。

1. Matilda by Roald Dahl
2. Hatchet by Gary Paulsen
For senior high school students:
3. Life of Pi by Yann Martel
4. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
陳超明表示，英文閱讀有三個層次，首先要了解書中文意的意思，而且「我們應該要讀出聲音來，英文的read是閱加上讀，不是只有『看』書，建議學生在讀的時候，要讀出聲音，或許會有生字，但可以大聲讀出來，再去查單字，尤其要把動詞標示出來，英文小說中，寫得最好的就是動詞。」
My comments: Well, it depends on the purpose. Reading aloud slows down the reading speed and is not natural. So if your purpose is to read just for the gist, then don't read aloud. In fact, when you take a GRE test, if you read aloud, you're very unlikely to finish the reading comprehension part. For GRE, the speed is important. Skimming for important ideas is what counts.
第二個層次，陳超明說，要去理解不同的文化層次，例如《簡愛》的故事背景是十九世紀的英國，當時的社會氛圍與現代當然不同；又與《少年Pi的奇幻漂流》中印度少年的世界不同，西方社會與亞洲文化是有差異的，試想如果是一位西方少年遇到老虎，情節可能不同。
最重要的是，陳超明說，要訓練批判思考的能力，要去問為什麼、為什麼？少年如何與老虎相處、《手斧男孩》書中主角面臨抉擇時，為何會做這樣的選擇，要從不斷地問為什麼中去尋找答案，這才是閱讀中需要培養的獨立思考與批判能力。像《小魔女》中，女主角Matilda如何面對惡老師，發揮自己的能力，都是值得再想想的。
陳超明推薦的書，適合國中生的分別是《小魔女》、《手斧男孩》。後者描述13歲小男孩布萊恩，因父母離異，獨自搭飛機到加拿大父親居住地，小飛機飛越加拿大北方森林時，由於駕駛心臟病發作死亡，飛機墜毀在荒野。布萊恩獨自在荒野中，以媽媽送他的短柄小斧頭，運用所知的求生本能，與大自然搏鬥，努力活下去。
台灣導演李安將Yann Martel的小說Life of Pi改編成電影，小說又受到重視。十九世紀英國小說家夏洛蒂．勃朗特的《簡愛》，是寫孤女Jane Eyre一生，這兩本適合高中程度閱讀。
My comments: My friend KK, who introduced to me Life of Pie more than five years ago, spoke highly of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I'd like to recommend Tuesdays with Morrie, and The Five People You, Meet in Heaven, both by Mitch Albom. For parents and teachers, The Element by Ken Robinson and Lou Aronica is a must read.
