Poor English?

A similar article to the following one can be found in today's UDN, in which Mr. Lee (李家同教授), whom I respect a lot, mentioned the gloomy situation of the English education in Taiwan.   However, I know many students in Taiwan have a good command of Engish.

「I sees」、「I loves」這些明顯文法錯誤都來自都會區國立高中生。暨南大學、靜宜大學榮譽教授李家同指出,台灣學生的英文程度「有待加強」,連博士班學生都寫出「They are no money to go to school」這種離譜句子。但每次跟國高中老師分享時,老師表情木然,一點都不訝異,但這樣的情況卻始終不見改善。

Comments:  I never saw my students write such a wrong sentence.  They'll laught at this sentence. 

上午李家同受聘擔任德明財經科大專任講座教授,並在德明教師教學知能研習營中,以「如何教出較好的大學生」為題專題演講,面對兩百多位大學教師,直接點出目前大學生英文程度到底有多差。

李家同專攻電機領域,但上學期開的卻是「英文課」,李家同說:「要先教最基礎的生字與文法,英文程度差成這樣,大學就教起承轉合,簡直毫無道理。」

My comments: Yes. Vocabulary and grammar are the basics. But when students begin to learn paragraph writing in the third year of high school, they are taught the idea of unity and coherence. 

例如「I sees」這種離譜的錯誤,李家同表示,大家別忘了,大學生已經歷中學六年的英文教育,居然還弄不清楚何時動詞要加S,探討其中原因,老師不重視基本功有很大關係。

My comments:  Few students make this mistake.  Rather, more students forget to put -s after the verb of a third singular subject.

有些大學近年來端出全英文授課,李家同也不敢苟同。他仔細觀察這些大學畢業生,英文程度也沒好到哪裡去,如果學生聽不懂卻採用英語上課根本不切實際。他認為,學好英文更該先從基礎做起,以他的學生為例,每天需要讀一篇文章,每周一次寫一次作文,持續累積才有辦法學好語言。

My comments:   As my student Spencer once mentioned, reading the same article for the 2nd time is a good way to learn English.  For the first time, we focus on the meaning.   For the 2nd time, we shift our attention to the form, learning good words and phrases, organization, etc. 

李家同甚至批評現在的高中英文教育,大學學測與指考都有英文作文,但仔細觀察現在高中生英文程度,能寫好作文的到底有多少?只靠著台北老師來決定英文教育,根本不了解目前高中生的程度根本沒資格談作文,還不如先把基本句子學好,再來談作文這件事。

My comments: However, some students really write quite well.  Those who get above 15 for their UEE English composition.
