This afternoon on the radio I heard Hsu, Wei (徐薇), a famous cram school English teacher, say that when she was studying at TFG (北一女), her English teacher had them memorize the editorial in the China Post every day.
Every morning the students in her class had to write down the editorial from memory. Those who failed the quiz would stand outside the classroom as a punishment. The students worked really hard. According to Ms. Hsu, even though they had looked up all the new words, they still couldn't understand the editorial. However, now many of her high school students, with a good command of English, prosper in their career.
Ms. Hsu didn't say in which year she received such training. That is a good way to learn reading and writing as long as it is not conducted in the 1st year.
