Travel Is the Best Teacher--An Essay by a Student

The following is an essay by a student on "Travel Is the Best Teacher." When writing the 1st paragraph, many students didn't pay attention to the two words "Best Teacher" in the topic and just wrote about the advantages of travel, for example, how travel releases pressure from school or work, or what can be learned on a trip. In fact, more focus should be put on how travel teaches more or better than other kinds of teachers, such as books or human teachers. The following essay is one of the few that mention this point.

Travel Is the Best Teacher

As the Chinese proverb goes, “We gain more from traveling ten thousand miles than studying ten thousand books."  Travel not only is entertaining but also teaches us a lot of things, in a better way. For instance, the feeling of climbing Ali Mountain by ourselves cannot be replaced by merely reading about it in a book or a magazine. In other words, travel can give us what books or human teachers fail to.

Take my own travel experiences for example. Not until I looked over the valleys at Hualien and Taitung did I really grasp the description of the magnificent gorges in my geography textbook, or even beyond that. In addition, on a trip to Japan, I saw for myself the houses built of woods intended to withstand the shaking of earthquakes. The sight of the houses etched an everlasting memory in my mind. Travel is the best teacher. It makes knowledge real and unforgettable. (155 words) (314 徐子強)
