An article on Leadership

Yesterday I read an article in the latest TIME.  The title is "Mandela: His 8 Lessons of Leadership."   For those who are interestd in leadership, this is a must-read article.  In San-min Textbook Book 5, the third lesson is "What It Takes to Be a Good Leader."  This TIME article may serve as a good supplementary material.

Before I read the article, I had known Mandela got the Nobel Prize for Peace and that he was once president of South Africa.   However, I didn't know he was such a charming person.  His radiant smile is a message saying that he is always happy about what he is doing.  And that is listed by the author Richard Stengel as one of the lessons of leadership from Mendela.

What impressed me most is an episode about how Mendela pretended to be calm when one of the plane engines failed.  He pretended to be calm so that he could calm those people in panic.

"Some on the plane began to panic.  The only thing that calmed them was looking at Mendela, who quietly read his newspaper as if he were a commuter on his morning train to the office."

After the emergency landing, Mendela told the author, "Man, I was terrified up there!"  Gee!  I love his frankness.

The episode is under the heading: No. 1 Courage is not the absence of fear--it's inspiring others to move beyond it
