剛當完兵，在台南大學英美語文系擔任講師的吳保霖，最近同時被美國11所名校英文研究所博士班錄取，他決定就讀威斯康辛大學麥迪遜分校，攻讀美國文學和人文環境生態學。

吳保霖說，他高中時猛背字典，常聽長春藤美語，讀出樂趣，決定了後來攻讀英文系的方向。

錄取吳保霖的包括紐約大學水牛城校區、亞利桑那大學、密蘇里大學等校，吳保霖托福、GRE及專業學力測驗都近滿分，獲麥迪遜五年研究生教學獎學金，減免學雜費、保險費，還有每年1萬元到1萬8千元美金的零用金。

吳保霖的父親吳鴻裕、母親林秀美都是雲林縣斗六國中退休老師，父親教英文，母親教國文，除吳保霖的英文頂呱呱，弟弟吳保漢也在政治大學英文研究所讀碩士班。

吳鴻裕說，吳保霖上國中後，大都照學校課程讀英文，但課餘大量閱讀中文、英文書刊，國三後聽廣播練聽力，閱讀英文期刊時，除了查字典，有問題就問他。英文基礎要扎得穩，須多讀中英文對照的簡易本、摘要本，如湯姆歷險記、頑童流浪記等。

吳保霖表示，高一時他猛背字典單字，再聽長春藤美語、空中美語教室等廣播，訓練聽力。

他背字典的方法是從課本的單字、片語先查閱，再延伸出去，又做密密麻麻的筆記，並不斷把新學到的單字、片語練習寫成句型或作文；大學聯考時，吳保霖只填12個英文系志願，參加台大英文系推甄敗北，讓他警覺到「學到的還不夠多」，後來考取彰化師範大學英文系，再讀台大外文研究所碩士班。

My comments:  "Learning by doing" is the best strategy for langauge learners.  Using what we have learned strengthens our memory. 

When it comes to learning new words, I remember Peter Lai (賴世雄), the founder of the Ivy League magazine, said in his speech that when he decided to start over to learn English in college, he looked up every word he came across in the China Post. For example, he even consulted the dictionary for such simple words as "book" and learned its different meanings and usages.
