Quotes from The Alchemist

Today in Class 303, I wrote on the blackboard my favorite sentence from The Alchemist too.  I love the sentence because it is powerful, especially the words " the whole universe conspires."   Just visualize it.

"When you really want something, the whole universe conspires in helping you achieve it."

Let it Be--心煩時記住三句話

This afternoon in Class 301, to reinforce students' faith that they can do well on July's entrance exam, I wrote on the blackboard a sentence from The Alchemist, one of my favorite sentences.

On Frustration, a Short Film--每個挫折都有它的意義

This morning, the result of the first stage of this year's college application came out. My congratulations to those who have passed the first stage and will move on to the second stage. However, for those who didn't, the seeming failure is very likely to be a blessing in disguise. That is, you've got a chance to go to a better place as long as you work hard for around three more months. Just move on.

2012 SAT Good Writing Pieces

Today CEEC posted good Chinese and English writing pieces on its website.  The other day a colleague told me a classmate of her daughter's got a phone call from CEEC, asking her permission to post her essay on its website.  The student got a 19.5 out of 20.

A Good Website for Writing Samples

A few days ago, a student in Class 303 asked me where he could find some writing samples. At that moment, I couldn't name a book or a website to satisfy his need. However, I've never forgotten to look for one for him. Just now, I came across the following writing website, where you can find around 100 sample essays. In the "Student ESL Essays" section, the author not only presents the original essay and the revised version but analyzes the correction. I'd like to thank web owner for his generosity.

On Upbringing--「誰見過風?」 教養如風無形

This evening while I was flipping through the old newspapers, I came across the following article. The first part of the title "Who Has Seen the Wind?" caught my eye and touched my heart. It is the title of a short poem by Christina Rossetti, a 19th-century British poet. Mr. Huang compared education to the wind. Very poetic.

Stanford Marshmallow Experiment

Today I had Classes 311 and 301 watch the "Don't Eat the Marshmallow...Yet" video as a wrap-up activity for Unit 2, intending to remind them of another factor for success--self-discipline, the ability to delay gratification. When Class 311 watched the video, I let them see the subtitles; however, finding that the subtitles somewhat distracting, I decided to let Class 301 choose for themselves whether to have the subtitles on. Surprisingly, they chose not to. When the students saw the interesting girl in the Columbia experiment, they roared with laughter. They could see how hard it was for the little girl to resist the temptation.

A Video About Self-discipline: Don't Eat the Marshmallow Yet!

This is a very interesting TED video, especially the second half, where we can view the marshmallow experiment reproduced in Columbia. The marshmallow experiment is about delayed gratification and self-discipline. The following is some information about delayed gratification provided by Wikipedia:
