實用英文 別困課本裡

每年大學入學考試考完，老師、學生及家長都在討論這次考試難易度如何？會考幾級分？是否會超出高中課本範圍？這些都是曲解了大學入學考試的本質。

大學入學考試本質上是種門檻及篩選測驗，是評量學生是否有能力來念大學，不管是學科能力測驗或是指定科目考試，大抵設計來檢驗學生繼續升學的基本能力，配合各大學的要求（有些學校希望學生達到高標的英文能力）與學系的特色（有的強調學生的數理能力），考試本身並非是高中學習的成就測驗。

My comments: Like TOEFL, the entrance exam is a proficieny test, not an achievement test. Achievement tests are the quizzes, mid-terms, and finals held in school.

以大學考試的本質看，考試是否符合高中課綱或是否過難，並不是考量重點。以近幾年的英文考試為例，幾乎是以學生的英文能力為主，並非考課本的內容，如今年閱讀測驗涵蓋很多跨文化的認知、社會現象等，並非單純的語言知識（如字彙或句型）。

My comments: I often tell my students that when taking an English test which includes quite a few passages, they are acquiring information at the same time and that they should enjoy this experience.

很多英文滿級分的學生都說，平常閱讀英文小說，強化閱讀能力，並非死背單字或文法規則，甚至很多老師也認為只讀英文教科書，無法處理大考的英文能力測驗。以英文考試為例，測驗的目的主要是看學生有無達到進入大學所需要的基礎能力，如實用英文（表達能力）、學術英文（閱讀、書寫等），並不是考課本內容或瑣碎的文法知識。

My comments: Wayne, a student who got the top ranking score in English; that is, a 15, on last year's SAT and a 93 on July's UEE , told me that his reading of some Reader's Digest articles did help him when he took the tests.

Though students should go beyond the 6 textbooks, I still encouraged them to review the textbooks because by repetition they can internalize good English expressions naturally. Of course, I also put emphasis on extensive reading and always invited them to read some authentic reading materials.

這幾年來的大學學科考試，大抵以這種能力指標為測驗的依據，很多題目結合時事或學術，測驗學生的文化認知、語言表達、批判思考、解決問題的能力。這次的英文考試更可看出這種趨勢，從翻譯題目要求學生利用自己的字彙與句法能力，表達台灣電影工業的發展；作文題目更是以解決問題為主，勸告同學不要沉迷電玩；閱讀測驗更是多元文化與社會情境的閱讀，這些都已經超出了過去只是瞭解單字或描述的簡單語言能力，而要求學生「使用」語言來面對真實的生活或學術環境。

個人樂見大學的英文考試，正視學生未來進入大學與社會所具備的語言與思考能力，也為出題者喝彩。但是，老師、學生與家長也必須了解學生真實能用的能力，以英文為例，是要能夠以這個語言來表達、解決問題，不是困在那些瑣碎的文法知識裡面。應該要重視學生能力指標，打破既有的教學迷思，別困在課本或參考書的文法句型練習，鼓勵學生多閱讀，多使用英文，大學考試一定會拿高分。

My comments: Last semester, I gave students an article to read every week. After reading it, they have some missions to complete, for example, writing a summary, answering questions related to the topic, giving their personal reflection on the article, or giving advice on a problem, etc.
