Start with What You Love--A Good Way to Learn English

Around 11am, Shih-jen (張世仁), a former student, paid me a visit, and near the end of our conversation, I requested that she give a short talk to Class 311 in English on how to learn English. To my surprise and delight, she agreed. Why surprised? Because she had to postpone her lunch until after 1pm since the class started at 12:50.

In her talk, she suggested the students start with what they love. Take boys . If they love sports, then watch ESPN. If they are crazy about cars, read English car magazines. As for girls who like gossip, read Seventeen or People, though these magazines are not all about gossip. For those fashion lovers, read Vogue. In a casual way, she emphasized.

Shih-jen also mentioned the TIME magazine, saying that they don't need to read everything in it, but just pick what interests them. Watching TV series such as Friends with the English subtitles on or listening to English songs and then google the lyrics also help, she added. Besides, she advised them to speak English.

Starting with what one loves and gradually moving on to what one is unfamiliar with is really a fun way to learn English.

Thank you, Shih-jen, for your time and the tips you shared.
