The following is a writing sample for the 1st UEE mock exam, which was held last Thursday and Friday. The time limit for the exam was 80 minutes. Students had to answer 51 multiple choice questions, including 10 vocabulary items, two passages for cloze with 10 blanks, 1 passage completion, 5 items for discourse structure, 4 reading passages with 16 questions, translate 2 sentences, and write an essay.
The student has quite a good command of English. He/She wrote a 226-word essay after finishing the multiple choice section. Though there are still several mistakes, which were underlined, the content is good.

英文作文 (99學年度第二學期指考第一次聯合模擬考)
I saw a speech two years ago. It was given by Director Randy, who suffered from cancer and had only few times to live that time. However, during the speech, he didn’t look sad and upset as I expected, instead, he was passionate and happy. The main idea in the speech was to teach people how to realize the dreams. He also told us about his own dreams, making us understand his way to conquer to obstacles. Randy’s words were funny and meaningful, teaching me many thoughts that I have never thought of in an attractive way. At the end, I almost forgot that he was a patient and all I focused on was what he had said.
Through the speech, I learned several lessons. One of them was that we should try very hard to achieve our dreams. Just as Randy said, “Experience is what you get when you didn’t get what you want”. We would definitely learn something valueable from them even through we fail in the end. Yet, it was his attitude to life that encouraged me the most. Though he was sick, what he did was cherish his limited life, spending the time doing what he wanted to do. Although, Randy passed away several years ago, he, his speech and the lessons I learned from would deeply rooted in my heart forever. (226 words)
