Pep Talks from NHSH Graduates

314 and former students

314 and former students

This morning, some former students came to talk to my class. They are Kuo-yao Wang (王國耀), Ying-chun Chen (陳映均), Yi-ting Liu (劉宜庭), Yan-wen Lin (林晏紋), Chi-chuan Tsai (蔡吉全), and Yu-ting Hsiao (蕭妤庭).

Yesterday the students just finished their 1st UEE mock exam, and next Monday; that is, the day after tomorrow, the students will get their SAT results. Today is a good time for some pep talks. The following are some important points made in the talks:

1. After you get the SAT result, quickly decide whether you'll apply to college. Once you decide not to, forget everything about the application and start working hard for the UEE.

2. Your future is the result of what you do now. You are building your life. No one can do it for you.

3. Manage time well. For example, in his 3rd year of high school, Kuo-yao learned new things during the weekdays and did the reviewing on weekends.

4. If you want to do well on the UEE, during the four to five months before it, study all the time when you are awake and not eating meals.

5. Do not give up any subject. If you plan to major in business or management, spend more time on Chinese, English, and math.

6. English is still very useful after you enter college, so learn it well.

7. To make your Chinese or English good, read as much as possible.

8. When reviewing math, do exercises that combine the concepts from different units. Don't just focus on one single unit.

9. Try your best to go to a good university with bountiful resources.

10. Those who want to major in statistics, accounting, or finance need to have a better grasp of math.

Also, Yi-ting told the students what the different fields in the college of business are about, which often confuses high school students.

Thank you for your time, Kuo-yao, Ying-chun, Yi-ting, Yan-wen, Chi-chuan, and Yu-ting.
