加考英聽 倒楣是弱勢生

最近，有人建議考大學要加考英聽，不論這個考試用何種方式執行，我都反對。

我認為現在高中生的負擔已經非常重了，如果再加上英聽，恐怕最高興的是補習班，最沮喪的是弱勢的孩子。他們的家庭不會講英文，他們也沒有任何的設備，別忘了，很多弱勢家庭根本沒有電腦，更不要說網路了，如何和家庭好的孩子比，考英聽的結果，絕對會使教育差距越來越大。

My comments: Some complementary measures are needed if listening is going to be included on the UEE. For example, schools and public library provide rooms for students to practice listening. Refraining from trying wouldn't do those underprivileged students any good either.

英文聽力不好，最重要的原因乃是因為認識的生字不夠多。我們總不能規定對方只用一千個英文字，所以不妨看看我們的大學生，究竟能不能看得懂教科書，不必問他聽不聽得懂ＢＢＣ廣播。我曾經從英文資訊教科書中選了六個句子，這些句子對我而言是絕對看得懂的，我讓很多大學的資訊系學生翻譯這些句子。沒有想到的是，很多後段班大學的學生幾乎全軍覆沒，他們根本連很多該認識的英文字都不認得，這些單字也都是資訊學科絕對該認得的字。更令我大吃一驚的是，即使我國最優秀的大學，也有一半受測驗的學生，在翻譯上會犯錯，而錯的句子是一個比較長的句子，同學們弄不清楚主詞和動詞是什麼，因此完全誤解了句子的意思。

My comments: Including listening on the UEE would force students to put more emphasis on the sounds of English words, which in turn might well help students enlarge their vocabulary.

This summer, I'm doing something different than I used to. I have the students translate the English essays in a composition book into Chinese in turn and give a oral report. Then in a week, the whole class are asked to translate the Chinese version back into English. By doing so, the students can find out the differences between English and Chinese sentence structures. The purpose of having the students translate a passage instead of single sentences is to help them learn ways to develop ideas in writing.

值得慶幸的是，我指導的研究生大獲全勝，沒有一位翻錯了句子，這不是一件偶然的事。這些學生必須用英文和我寫信，用英文寫報告，每周一定要看一篇英文的新聞報導。如果他們的英文句子出了問題，我一定會改正，每一周他們也要寫一篇英文作文，我也會改這篇作文。也就是這個原因，他們的英文有很大的進步。

My comments: Practice makes perfect. I'm wondering how Mr. Lee checks whether his students read the news report. Usually when I have my students read a news report in class, I ask them both some comprehension questions and what new English expressions they've learned from the report.

當前該注意的是，如何幫助大學生，使他們的英文更好，這不是一件簡單的事。大學的英文教育必須非常腳踏實地，我常常說，最起碼的條件就是大學生看得懂英文的本科教科書，同學們之所以看不懂英文教科書，最大的原因仍是生字不夠。如果大學生每一周都有人考他本科教科書上的生字，日久天長，他的生字就會增加。除此之外，分析句子的能力也是一件重要的事，英文句子往往很長，即使找到了主詞，動詞往往在很遠的地方，同學常常會找錯了動詞，當然就完全誤解了句子的原意。

會聽，會說，會寫英文，恐怕根本就是奢侈品，先立下一個比較重要的目標，使每位同學都能看得懂本行英文教科書，這恐怕就要送掉半條命了。

英聽千萬不要考，生字不多，英文聽力絕對不會好，考英聽又是那些強勢學生會佔極大的便宜，我們弱勢的孩子絕對倒楣的。

My comments: If the words used on the listening test are limited to the basic 4000 words, would it still be unfair?
