About This Year's English Writing on the UEE--英文作文/媽媽被煮?入味也得對味

英文作文/媽媽被煮?入味也得對味

大學指考英文科作文題目「smell」,閱卷老師昨天指出,考生多半從自身經驗出發,從阿嬤的香水、同學的汗味、臭豆腐到巧克力都有;但有考生以日文作答、畫棒球場,都得零分。

My comments: A very creative topic. I don't think anyone could have predicted it before the UEE.

英文非選題閱卷召集人台師大英語系教授張武昌說,評分標準在中譯英方面,每個錯誤扣零點五分作文依內容、組織、文法句構、字彙拼字及體例五項目給分,字數不足或未分段都扣一分

二、英文作文( 2 0 分)

說明:1. 依提示在「答案卷」上寫一篇英文作文。

            2. 文長至少120個單詞(words)。 

提示:在你的記憶中,哪一種氣味(smell)最讓你難忘?請寫一篇英文作文,文長至少120 字,文分兩段,第一段描述你在何種情境中聞到這種氣味,以及你初聞這種氣味時的感受,第二段描述這個氣味至今仍令你難忘的理由。

When the examinees are required to write two paragraphs, they have to; otherwise, one point would be taken off.   Following the instructions is important.

翻譯題方面,張武昌說,句型不難,但關鍵字如出生率(birth rate),有考生寫成born rate,人力資源(human resources或manpower)則有考生少加s或拼錯。

My comments: Those who used "manpower" must have done some extensive reading during the three years in high school.

張武昌說,考生要用自己最熟悉的單字,寫對都可以得分,但寫錯就得扣分,例如下降用drop即可,有人用decrease和decline,但拼錯會被扣分。

My comments: Here is the translation task: 





一、中譯英( 8 分) 

說明:1.請將以下中文句子譯成正確、通順、達意的英文,並將答案寫在「答案卷」上。

            2.請依序作答,並標明題號。每題4分,共8分。 

1. 近二十年來我國的出生率快速下滑。

2. 這可能導致我們未來人力資源的嚴重不足。

"Decline" is as often used as "drop," both of which are better than "decrease." For the first sentence, the present perfect tense has to be used.

作文方面,張武昌肯定命題與考生日常生活經驗結合,很多考生從自身家庭出發溫馨感人,有人提到祖母身上的花露水味道、阿嬤洗髮精味道,也有寫同學體育課汗味;甚至有人寫加油站的汽油味、臭豆腐、巧克力等,有很多面向

My comments: An interesting topic! The raters won't fall asleep while grading the papers.

張武昌說,作文大家都會寫,但「相當有鑑別度」,如果表達不清楚,作文滿分廿分,只能得七、八分。有考生原要寫母親的飯菜香,應寫Mom cooks for us every day.(媽媽每天替我們作菜),卻寫成Mom was cooked every day(媽媽每天被煮),文法錯意思就錯了

My comments: Grammar is surely important.

佳作方面,張武昌說,有考生寫本來跟爸爸關係疏遠,因為腳受傷,由爸爸背他到醫院,聞爸爸身上的汗味,之後聞到汗味都想到爸爸對他的愛心,由於用字正確、表達清楚,可以得十六分以上
