Teaching Grammar with Simple Graphs

(Please click on the photo to enlarge it.)

Today, we dealt with the sentence pattern "Adj..., S V...." After examples were given, sentences were made, and the exercise was done, I pointed out the difference between the following two sentences:

1. Surprisingly, she got the first prize.

2. Surprised, she screamed with joy.

First, I wrote the two sentences on the blackboard. Then I asked the students why different words were used to begin the sentences. After listening to their answers, I modified what they said and drew the graphs on the blackboard. At this point, everything seemed to be clear to them. Very often, visual aids help learners  understand faster and better.
