The following is a page from the website "Diffen," which compares "empathy" with "sympathy."

In fact, it's not difficult to distinguish these two words. The difference between "empathy" and "sympathy" lies in the prefixes of them. "Em-" means "in," so with empathy, we are "in" another one's suffering. We feel as if we were the suffering one. "Sym-" means "with;" therefore, by showing sympathy, we are together with another one who is suffering.
