5 Things the U.S. Can Learn from China--a TIME Article

The cover story of the latest issue of TIME is "5 Things the U.S. Can Learn from China."  Before clicking on the link, guess what they are.

Today I asked Class 214 to guess what the five things are.  Among the answers they gave are diligence and frugality.  Then I told them what are on the list:

1. Be Ambitious

2. Education Matters

3. Look After the Elderly

4. Save More

5. Look over the Horizon.

What impressed me most are two stories.  One, in Education Matters,  is about a 7-year-old in Shanghai going to school even on Saturday for two special classes, one of math and the other English.  The other story, in Look over the Horizon, is about a man in central China improving his family's living conditions by receiving education in Tsinghua University and, after graduation, working as a software engineer.

Education has always been deemed as a way to lift one out of poverty.  It is.
