Collocation used to be what I emphasized in teaching English. In the first class every semester, I would tell students to mark chunks in their readings. For example, in Chinese, the verbs in the following phrases are the same: "開," write a check, open an account, give sb. a ticket, fly a plane, turn on the TV, etc., but in English, different verbs go with different nouns.

Investigating Social Issues Through Literature

Posted on 18 November 2015 by Guest Author

In one of my favorite classes, we explore social issues through a literary lens. Literature is perfect for this because good writers tend to avoid dogmatic positions. They show rather than tell, which helps students get a nuanced view of a complicated subject.

My comments: Around 20 years ago, at a junior high school textbook compilation meeting, Karen, an NTU professor who is a native speaker of English, pointed out that the Americans hate to read essays which seem didactic.

5 Ways to Make the Most of Written Feedback

Do you remember getting papers back from your English or composition teachers that were covered in red ink? Did you take the time to decode each individual marking, consider every error, and diligently redraft your paper until it was flawless? Really? You did? Because I remember scanning for my grade, then fixing the mistakes marked by symbols as disinterestedly as if they were math problems—but only when revisions were required. The most frustrating part was that I made mistakes when I knew the correct rule, but somehow I just tapped the wrong key or picked the wrong word.

My comments: When I asked a friend's kid for an essay he had written so that I could give him some advice on his writing, he said he had thrown all of the returned essays away.

Infinitive "To" v.s. Preposition "To"

My answer to yesterday's question was/is:

If you change the words after "to" to the pronoun "it" and the sentence makes sense, then the "to" is a preposition and thus should be followed by a gerund (V-ing). Otherwise, it is part of an infinitive and a root verb should come after it.

2015年11月8日 星期日

To + V v.s. To + Ving

My niece asked me a question yesterday:

In the following sentences, why does a V-ing follow the "to"? Shouldn't it be the root verb?

1. I'm accustomed to sleeping with the window open.

2. I look forward to going home next month.

Besides telling her the "to" here is a preposition instead of an infinitive "to," guess what else I told her so that she learned when to use V-root and when to use V-ing after "to."

My comments: Watching videos to learn English is one of the best ways. An NTNU professor shared his experience: When he was in college, he often went to the movies. He watched the same movie twice. (Back then, moviegoers could stay in the theater as long as they liked.) For the first time, he watched it as entertainment, while for the second time, he listened to the movie with his eyes closed.

有了強大的資源,更要用對的方法,才能真正事半功倍。今天,我們要介紹一個如魔術般神奇的學英文技巧— Echo Method(回音法)。
