Tasks for Learning Phonics

Today, while doing the cleaning, I found a handout I made for a speech on teaaching phonics years ago. In the second section is a list of tasks for learning phonics. Among others, here are ten tasks:

1. Listen to each word and circle the initial letter.

E.g. Students hear “bad,” and they circle “b” among “b, d, p.”

2. Color the things that begin with the sound of [p].

E.g. Students see a picture of an apple, a bear, and a deer.

3. Write the letter that begins each word.

E.g. Students sees the picture of a boy and __oy.

4. Draw a line matching two words which begin with the same sound.

5. Circle the words in each row that begin with the same sound as the word at the beginning of the row.

E.g. two | this   too   chair   teacher

6. Look at the picture. Say the word. Circle the letter that starts the word.

E.g. Students see a dog, say “dog,” and circle “d” among “a, c, f, d.”

7. Jack can jump. He can jump over words that start with “j”! Circle each word that Jack can jump over.

8. Put an X next to the words that end in “m.”

9. Draw a line through the three pictures that have the same beginning sounds.

10. Ant and It have their words all mixed up! Write the words that have a short A sound in Ant’s house. Write the words that have a short I sound in It’s house.

E.g. pig  hat  lamp  six  hill   hand   fish   bad
