「每天讀30分鐘英文小說，英文能力就會逐漸變成直覺。」國內最具規模的書林高中職英文讀書心得比賽去年冠軍得主賴宜謙說。第三屆比賽即日起徵件，去年參與學生3千人，預計今年將超過此數。

去年拿第一名的曉明女中高二生賴宜謙說，閱讀是學英文最有效、也最「享受」的方式；不管課業有多忙，她每天都花30分鐘讀英文小說，不但可累積大量英文字彙，連她一向討厭的文法，都能自然學會應用。最近讀的是「最後十四堂星期二的課」。

My comments: A former student who scored above 900 on a TOEIC when she was in her sophomore year told me she finished two novels during her commute on the train in high school.   One was P.S. I Love You, and the other was Twilight.

Tuesdays with Morrie is one of my favorite books.  I gave quite a few copies to my students.

有些學生認為，讀英文小說最好不要一直停下來查單字，以免破壞閱讀的樂趣；先接著讀下去，也許後面就能猜出單字的意義。但賴宜謙則堅持碰到看不懂的單字就查電子辭典，「馬上查出來，印象最深刻，記得最牢。」

My comments: It depends on our purpose.  If we want to read fast to know what the story is about, then we'd better not look up every new word we come across.  On the other hand, if our purpose is to expand our vocabulary, consulting the dictionary helps.

但如不懂的字彙太多怎麼辦？賴宜謙說，當單字量還不多時，選擇適合自己程度的書就很重要。她推薦英國作家羅爾德‧達爾的作品，如「查理與巧克力工廠」，後來還改編成電影。

今年比賽推薦書單，經典類包括「傲慢與偏見」、「小王子」、「秘密花園」等，奇幻冒險類有「飢餓遊戲」、「暮光之城」、「少年Pi的奇幻漂流」等，參賽高中生也可另選自己喜歡的小說。

My comments: My American friend Konraad recommended to me Yann Martel's fantasy adventure novel Life of Pie and Suzanne Collins's young adult novel The Hunger Games.  He also regarded J. R. R. Tolkien's fantasy novel The Lord of the Rings as a classic.

評審之一的實踐大學應外系講座教授陳超明表示，這項比賽的特色在排除「近5年內就讀用英語教學學校2年以上」的學生，且不只比英文的組織、文法、修辭，內容是否有見解、原創性、引人入勝也占總分的50%。
