The following are three pieces of news which I guess my students might be interested in, with phrases underlined by me.

1. Restrictions on Chinese Tourists Coming to Taiwan

Taiwan authorities say Mainland China is stepping up control over Chinese
tourists coming to Taiwan ahead of the island's elections.

A local China Times newspaper report said that starting September China has
imposed more restrictions on group and individual tourists who applied to
visit the island.

It quotes Taiwan's national security sources to say that lately quite a few
Chinese scholars have applied to come here as individual travelers with the
aim of
observing Taiwan's elections.

The report said Chinese authorities, worried that the elections may be
somehow affected, have tightened the screening of individual tourists bound
of Taiwan.

They've also ordered that high-ranking officials suspend their trips to
Taiwan.

That means the number of Chinese tourists will be cut by an average of 6,000
per month, according to Taiwan's estimates.

The report also said that Taiwan would warn those Chinese who come here
posing as tourists but in fact are spying on the island.

2. NTU Made 87th on QS World University Rankings
The Ministry of Education says the "50 billion NT for Five Years" project has
paid off, as can be seen by the National Taiwan University's rising in the QS
World University Rankings.

According to the U.K.-based higher education survey company, the NTU ranked
87th for 2011, up from 94th a year earlier.

Education official Ho Zhuo-fei says this shows that pouring billions of NT
dollars into Taiwan's top-tier universities has improved these schools'
performances.

According to the rankings, which include survey results from 32,000 academic
experts and 16,000 employers, University of Hong Kong, ranked 22nd, is the
best university in Asia.

It's followed by the University of Tokyo, at 25th, and National University of
Singapore, at 28th.

3. Ma Touts Seediq Bale

President Ma Ying-jeou urges people to go see the domestically produced
historical epic, Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale.

The film was screened for the first time in Taiwan last night outside the
Presidential Office on Ketagalan Boulevard, with Ma in attendance.

Speaking today, Ma praised the director, Wei De-sheng, for producing a
focused film that portrayed historical events as they happened.

He added that the movie seems to show that peace is the highest virtue.

Ma said he can recommend the film to everyone, adding that this movie is not
one to miss
.

The movie is entered in this year's 68th Venice International Film Festival,
which is currently underway.

It will also be shown at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival, which
will begin later in the week.
