A Letter to Mother Nature--Essay by a Student

The following is an essay by a former NHSH student who graduated this summer. He was not in my class. However, his English teacher spoke highly of his writing. So, last month when I happened to see him on campus, I requested him to share some of his essays. He generously agreed. Here is one.

Thank you, Ching-wei.

Dear Mother Nature,On behalf of all mankind on the earth, I would like to genuinely apologize to you for our abhorrent behavior. With the number of factories increasing, we have released lots of toxic gases into the atmosphere. What’s more, we pollute the lakes, the streams, the rivers, and even the seas with chemicals. In addition, we have also harmed the world by slaughtering animals on a vast scale for their meat and valuable fur. What we have done really suffocates the world. As a matter of fact, there come some catastrophic natural phenomena as a consequence of the counterattack launched by the disrupted nature you. Devastating tempests have damaged crops and the global warming is ge4tting severe owing to the man-released carbon dioxide. Nevertheless, this is about to be put to an end.

More and more people are awakened to environmental issues now. Generally, green products have substituted for the plastic ones. Concepts of conserving water and electricity are widely spread because not only does energy conservation reduce our bills, but it also helps the environment. It’s quite vital that human beings should live in harmony with the nature you. Accordingly, we are now sparing no effort toward a peaceful coexistence with you. We hope it is not too late.

Sincerely,

Ching-wei
