If I Were an English Teacher

Yesterday and today, I had the first encounter with my new students: Classes 303, 311, and 301. After briefly introducing myself, I had them write on cards some information so that I can get to know them more quickly. Besides basic personal data, two of the classes were asked to write a very short paragraph on "If I Were an English Teacher."

The following are reponses from Class 311. Those from Class 301 will be posted in tomorrow's entry.

1. Bring some books to class or play some movies so that students can learn from real life.

2. Spend more time on teaching writing.

3. Speak English in class. Play movies with English subtitles.

4. Show students how much fun learning English is.

5. No pressure, and no score.

6. Help them learn while playing. Not much homework, and not many tests.

7. Teach in interesting ways and make students love to learn English.

8. Make class activity-oriented.

9. Introduce games and competitions into class.

10. Teach lively.

11. Go beyond the textbook.

12. Give students more opportunities to speak English, even just chat. Have students do more presentations. Help them find out the joy in learning English.

13. Have students read English books.

14. Give students more opportunities to practice.

15. Create a great learning atmosphere instead of a serious one.

16. Have the students read books and articles to improve their vocabulary and reading comprehension skills and listen to the radio and pop songs to improve their listening.

17. Have students memorize as many vocabulary words as possible.

18. Try to make the learning experience easier and more enjoyable.

19. Help those who are not good at it and teach them with all my heart.

20. Give tests on vocabulary on a regular basis. Provide more practice of grammar and sentence patterns.

21. Focus more on listening and speaking.

22. Put emphasis on vocabulary.
