In the first of the two letters, Ms. Chen mentioned a good study method:
想要事半功倍,上課前最好先預習,上課時再仔細聆聽,會比較有概念。應將重點記下來,回家後儘速復習,花較少的時間,得到較好的效果。我也建議,若上課使用英文教材,即使有些字不認識,也不需要逐字查,上下文多看幾次,意思大致就懂了,真正的關鍵字不清楚時才查字典,否則會見樹不見林,而且會讀不完。
I can't agree with her more. Preview before class, concentrate in class, and review right after class. These were how I studied when I was a student, especially the first two steps.
As for the English textbooks, it's true that we don't need to look up every new word when coming across them; otherwise, we will never finish the assigned reading. According to research, those who are more tolerant of ambiguity are better language learners.
