My Procedure to Teach Unit 9 "A Memorable Event," an Anecdote of Charlie Chaplin

The following is how I taught Lesson 9 "A Memorable Event" today:

1. Ask students to act out some complaints to the hotel manager and the whole class guesses what the complaints are, for example, "The closet smells bad."

2. Present a 3-minute clip of part of the movie "The Circus," in which Chaplin is trapped in a lion cage.

3. Ask students who the actor is. (The students knew his name but could not give much information about him.)

4. Have them listen to two short passages about Chaplin's life and then mark the events in correct order. This is the listening exercise in the textbook. This is done before students read the text to arouse students' curiosity about how such a great actor, director, and producer started his career.

5. Have them fill in the listening transcripts.

6. Have them look at the topic of the lesson "A Memorable Event," and two are invited to share a memorable event in their life.

7. Go over the pictures in the warm-up section "Before You Read," with students describing the pictures, in the hope that they would really see what a prominent actor Chaplin was.

8. Ask students to read the whole text and do the reading comprehension check, followed by a discussion of the exercise.

9. Discuss the first two paragraphs, focusing more on the organization--main ideas, supporting sentences, etc.
